Hedd Wyn's poem Yr Arwr

On this website you can see manuscripts of a draft for Hedd Wyn's poem which he entered for the National Eisteddfod 1917. Such compositions take great flair and precision, as the poem must be written within the strict rules of the Welsh metre called cynghanedd. 'Yr Arwr' means 'The Hero'. It is a tradition that poets compete in eisteddfodau using a Ffugenw (nom-de-plume or pen-name), and for this Eisteddfod, Hedd Wyn signed 'Yr Awdl' as 'Fleur-de-Lis'.
