Propaganda

In addition to the heavy censorship imposed on all aspects of life by the state it was only half the battle in the war for hearts and minds. Propaganda was the other key tool availible to the state to deliver information and views regarding recruitment and conscription, the economy and success at the front. The state used a number of mediums, such as posters, newsreel, radio and newsletters to achieve it's propaganda objectives. Attached is a typical British poster from the period. It uses a number of visual methods to achieve it's goal of increasing recruitment. Patriotism, guilt, personal questioning and violence and destruction are all key themes that can be identified.
