Photographs from the Imperial War Museum: Women and the War

There are a over 100 photographs documenting the experience of women during the First World War. This photograph shows Munition Workers or 'Munitionettes'. These women produced 80% of the weapons and shells used by the British Army. Every day they risked their lives working with poisonous substances without adequate protective clothing or safety measures. They were nicknamed 'canaries' because their skin became yellow after being exposed to so much sulphur.
