Trench Systems
Trenches were dug and linked together thus creating an overall trench system. The image to the right shows a hand drawn map of one such trench system. There would be a front trench (the front line) with smaller spurs (or saps) running into No Man’s Land. This would be linked to trenches further back via communication trenches.
