A Standard Trench

The image here shows a German trench, which were generally better built than those of the Allies as the Germans intended to stay and were on the defensive. For the most part also, German trenches occupied the high ground. The soldier is using a periscope to look out across No Man’s Land (the space in between the two front line trenches). At his feet would be a fire step to allow him to see over the top of the trench, and running along the top at the front was the parapet to protect him.
