Loss compounded

Vera Brittain was devastated by the loss of her fiancé. This was compounded by the subsequent deaths of her and her brother's school friends. She heard of the death of Geoffrey Thurlow in the summer of 1916, while she was nursing at a hospital in Camberwell. Victor Richardson was blinded in the battle of Vimy Ridge in that same year, and succumbed to his wounds on 9th June 1917. On 15th June 1918 Vera's brother, Edward Brittain, was killed on the Austro-Italian front.
