It's also useful to look at war memorials. As well as the obvious public places, you will find smaller memorials in churches, schools and workplaces (e.g. banks, railway stations). These may include very sparse information about individuals but the designs, inscriptions and lists of names can convey a great deal. You may wish to note whether the memorial makes a class distinction between officers and men. You may also wish to see if women (in auxiliary services), civilians and animals are commemorated anywhere.
