The memorial scroll evidently has no official status but, according to the accompanying letter, was part of an attempt by an unemployed British officer living in France to make money during the "trade depression." Recipients were asked to send him two shillings and sixpence, which he said "even the very poor will be glad to pay." He offered extra services at additionl charges for photographs of the Thiepval Memorial and for laying wreaths and bouquets of flowers.
