Many items from the First World War come with minimal or no contextual information. For instance, the people in these photos, published on the website of the Independent newspaper in May 2009, had not been identified. The photographer is unknown. The photographic plates were found in a French barn. The pictures seem to date from the winter of 1915 and the spring and summer of 1916 (the run up to the Battle of the Somme).
