Overseas Chevrons, Wound Stripes and Medal Ribbons

You can see that the man on the right wears two Overseas Chevrons on his lower right arm, issued for every calendar year the man had served overseas. They were blue, (a red chevron indicated service in 1914). In a clear photo the difference can be seen even in black and white. He wears a wider inverted chevron on his lower left sleeve, (above a Wound Stripe), which was awarded after two years Good Conduct. Long Service and Good Conduct stripes were awarded for periods of good conduct, with no drunkenness or disobedience or other military misdemeanors. One stripe was for two years, two for five years. The man seated left also wears the ribbon of the Military Medal above his left tunic pocket and the Welsh dragon patch of the 38th (Welsh) Division on his shoulder.
