Battle of Pilkem Ridge

By the end of July Ellis' regiment was stationed near Pilkem Ridge (Pilckem Ridge). They were ordered to attack on the 31st July 1917 at 03.50hrs (3.50am). The 15th Battalion took Pilkem and then advanced toward Iron Cross (Hagebos). They came under heavy fire from the Germans in Battery Copse. Ellis was shot in the back. This plaque to the memory of the poet Hedd Wyn is located along the road from Boezinge to Langemark, just after Pilkem at a cross roads on a building opposite De Sportman bar. The memorial plaque records that he was mortally wounded near-by on the 31st of July 1917.
