The King's African Rifles (KAR) was a multi-battalion British colonial regiment based in East Africa from 1902 until independence in the 1960s. It performed both military and internal security functions within the East African colonies as well as external service. African . Rank and file were called askaris, while most officers were seconded from British Army regiments.
The East African Campaign (Date 3 August 1914–November 1918) was a series of battles and guerrilla actions which started in German East Africa and later spread to Mozambique, Northern Rhodesia, British East Africa, Uganda, and the Belgian Congo. The German colonial forces, led by Lieutenant Colonel (later Generalmajor) Paul Emil von Lettow-Vorbeck, fought for the duration of World War I and surrendered only after that war had ended.
