Noted as 'A great man'. The Army Scripture Readers undertook pastoral and missionary work among the troops, and all were or had been serving soldiers.
[Editor note: the SASRA have contacted the collection to provide some further details about Army Scripture Reader Rice: ASR Henry Rice, born 18 March 1855 Stoke-in-Teignhead, Devon. No record of his regiment. He was quite old when he joined SASRA at 60yrs.] Part of the photograph and scrap album of Revd. Leonard Thomas Pearson, Army Chaplain's Department (attached No. 44 Casualty Clearing Station), discovered in a skip and deposited with the Bodleian Library. Revd. Pearson was interviewed by Lyn Macdonald for her book 'The Roses of No Man's Land', which contains two extracts and a photograph. |
