Pre-printed letter sent from the Headquarters of the Fifth Army, British Expeditionary Force, to Corporal John Manchester, offering congratulations and good wishes on his being awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal. Manchester's details are typewritten. There is a signature in the bottom right corner, above the pre-printed word "General".
Manchester (Service Number 240698) served with the 1/5th Battalion of the Lincolnshire Regiment as a corporal and later a sergeant, and was awarded the DCM. He was severely gassed in the trenches, but went on to serve in the RAF during the Second World War. Part of a collection relating to John Manchester, deposited by his daughter-in-law, who describes him as "a very modest man". |
