On Guard Duty' - Story of Leonard Haynes
My Grandfather Lance Corporal Leonard Haynes No 26356 C Company 17 Welsh
Regiment was apparently on gaurad duty one evening whilst serving in
France(sometime between June 1916 and February 1918)had been told not to give
anyone directions if asked. He was approached by 2 officers in clean uniforms
and was asked for directions to the camp.
Gransha was suspicious as the uniforms were too clean for serving officers
and thinking they may be the spies they had been warned about told them "on
your bike".
The one officer asked "Don't you recognise me- I'm the Prince of Wales"
Gransha replied "And I'm the King of Prussia"
Apparently it was the Prince of Wales visiting to the Welsh Regiments and
Gransha ended up on a charge for insubordination!!

At some point gransha spent some time at No 1 Dysentry Camp, 24 Stationary Hospital Rouen. Whether the family story about his encounter with the Prince of Wales happened here I have been unable to find out.
