In 1914 Basil was a missionary in Madagascar. He returned to England after his brother Joseph was killed on HMS Amphion. Rejected as medically unfit, Basil became a Curate in High Wycombe. After his brother Peter was killed at Loos, Basil reapplied to the Army and was appointed Acting Chaplain 4th Class 26/5/1916. Basil married Mary Kathleen Atkinson on 11/7/1916, went to Greece with 78th Field Ambulance RAMC, was mentioned in despatches, and died of wounds on 25/4/1917. Mary died in 1980 after spending over 62 years as a childless widow.
