Notes |
I beleive that the person in this photgraph is my grandfather, John Rhodes, Private 22491 2nd Battalion, Grenadier Guards. He was killed in action 25th September 1916. He was Born in Marden in Kent in aprrox 1895 to 1897. He enlisted in Maidstone, kent. He has No known grave. Commemorated on THIEPVAL MEMORIAL, Somme, France. Pier and Face 8 D.
This photograph MAY not be John Rodes but may be George William Wellsman, (My other Grandfater) I suspect that the regiment is Yorks & Lancs. That is the Yorkshire and Lancashire Regiment. I have had a look at the World War 1 Medal cards and there is a William George WELLSMAN, Air Mechanic 3rd Class 65868, Royal Flying Corps. He was medically discharged from the Army. I have uploaded and listed his discharge papers also on this site under George William Wellsman. If anyone has any further information regarding this I would be grateful. Thank you June Wellsman Editor's Comment: The photograph is of Pte. 28493 William George Wellman, as proved by the York and Lancaster Regiment Capbadge. He enlisted in this regiment on 5th July 1916, and transferred to the Royal Flying Corps on 7th March 1917 (regt. number 65868), becoming an Air Mechanic 3rd Class and with whom he served overseas. Thus his medal card only mentions his service with the Royal Flying Corps. Discharged as medically unfit, 27th December 1917. |
