Good-bye card presented to Sergeant John Manchester by the 46th North Midland Division of the British Expeditionary Force. The card has Manchester's details completed by hand, and the printed message "Good-bye ; Good Luck, and all success to you in Civil life, from your old commander.", followed by a signature and the printed words "Major General commanding 46th North Midland Division."
Manchester (Service Number 240698) served with the 1/5th Battalion of the Lincolnshire Regiment as a corporal and later a sergeant, and was awarded the DCM. He was severely gassed in the trenches, but went on to serve in the RAF during the Second World War. Part of a collection relating to John Manchester, deposited by his daughter-in-law, who describes him as "a very modest man". |
