Arthur Hilton (East Yorks) was my grandfather, killed in action 3rd May 1915. He left a widow, Hilda Hilton, daughter Hilda aged 7 (my mother) and a son Leslie aged 3.
Arthur Hilton is listed on the roll of honour in Beverley Minster and his name appears on the Menin Gate. Editor's Comment: Letter sent to bereaved by Kitchener on behalf of the King and Queen. From the effects of Serjeant 1062 Arthur Hilton, 1st/4th Bn. East Yorkshire Regiment, killed in action 3rd May 1915, aged 31. The husband of Hilda Hilton (nee Davies, later Brown), of 17, William St., Porter St., Hull, he is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial. His battalion, as part of the 50th (Northumbrian) Division, was engaged in the Battle of St Julien, the second phase of the Second Battle of Ypres. |
