Definitions of Terms Used

Throughout this tutorial we will be making consistent use of some key terms and it is useful to consider these from the outset.

Alliteration
The repetition of usually initial consonant sounds in two or more neighboring words or syllables (such as ‘wild and woolly’, ‘threatening throngs’, etc.)
Concordance
An index of words in a literary work usually given with their immediate context. Often computer generated.
KWIC Display
A Keyword in Context display shows you all the occurrences of the word or words that you searched with one line of context.
Machine Searchable
An electronic text where the words can be manipulated by a computer. For example, a file opened in a word-porcess or can be manipulated – words can be cut, copied, pasted elsewhere, or searched through for phrases. As opposed to a computer image of a page, which can only be viewed but not searched.
Onomatopoeia
The naming of a thing or action by a vocal imitation of the sound associated with it (as in buzz or hiss).
Para-rhyme
The use of the same vowel sound with different consonants or the same consonant with different vowels, as in a line of verse e.g. mystery and mastery.
Word Cloud
Graphical representation or word frequency. Presents a picture of the most common words used with those used more often displayed larger.
Word List
A Word List display will give you a list of words that match the pattern you ask for.
