Definitions of Terms Used
Throughout this tutorial we will be making consistent use of some key terms and it is useful to consider these from the outset.
- Alliteration
- The repetition of usually initial consonant sounds in two or more neighboring words or syllables (such as ‘wild and woolly’, ‘threatening throngs’, etc.)
- Concordance
- An index of words in a literary work usually given with their immediate context. Often computer generated.
- KWIC Display
- A Keyword in Context display shows you all the occurrences of the word or words that you searched with one line of context.
- Machine Searchable
- An electronic text where the words can be manipulated by a computer. For example, a file opened in a word-porcess or can be manipulated – words can be cut, copied, pasted elsewhere, or searched through for phrases. As opposed to a computer image of a page, which can only be viewed but not searched.
- Onomatopoeia
- The naming of a thing or action by a vocal imitation of the sound associated with it (as in buzz or hiss).
- Para-rhyme
- The use of the same vowel sound with different consonants or the same consonant with different vowels, as in a line of verse e.g. mystery and mastery.
- Word Cloud
- Graphical representation or word frequency. Presents a picture of the most common words used with those used more often displayed larger.
- Word List
- A Word List display will give you a list of words that match the pattern you ask for.
