Pte William Henry Sperry 42475
William Henry Sperry fought with the Durham Light Infanry, 15th Batallion. He
was the eldest son of William Henry Sperry and Ada Heape. William was born in
Leicester in 1898.
He died during the battle of the Somme, on 16/09/1916, the day after the
tanks were fist sent in.
William never married and was only 18 when he died, less than a month before
his younger brother Leonard Cecil Sperry was born.
William's sacrifice is remembered on the Thiepval memorial and on a plaque
where he was formerly employed at the Leicester Tramways and Elictricity
Memorial, Abbey Park Road, Leicester.
