Medal ribbons

Gallantry and campaign medals were worn above the left tunic pocket. The most common amongst the BEF (the British soldiers that first went over to defend Belgium in 1914) was the ribbon of the 1914 Star. In this photograph the soldier wears the colourful ribbon of the Military Medal. In some cases you will be fortunate enough to find further information about this award on the medal card held by the National Archives, or in the London Gazette.
